Sustainable and Zero Landfill

An increase in human activity naturally leads to a higher volume of waste generation, specifically plastic waste. Environmental scientists have expressed strong concerns regarding the accumulation of plastic and other debris in the mountainous areas, as it destroys local vegetation and threatens valuable medicinal herbs. Without a proper, scientific solid waste management system, refuse piles up in the mountain valleys, creating severe ecological hazards and potentially leading to soil erosion and landslides.

Anticipating these challenges, the Government of Jammu & Kashmir acted swiftly to implement a comprehensive plan for proper sanitation and solid waste management, ensuring the protection of the ecologically sensitive Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra route.

The Directorate of Rural Sanitation, under the Department of Rural Development, Jammu & Kashmir Government, has been entrusted with the responsibility of organizing a Clean and Green Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026. The administration has firmly decided that this year's Yatra will once again be executed in a completely sustainable and zero-landfill manner.

Inspired by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, special emphasis is being placed on the following core initiatives to ensure a Sustainable and Zero Landfill Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026:

  • Strict ban on single-use plastics: 'Plastic Out – Cloth In'
  • Implementation of the 3R Principles: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
  • Adherence to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016
  • Source segregation of waste into wet (organic) and dry (inorganic) categories
  • On-site decentralized composting
  • On-site processing of inorganic waste
  • Comprehensive Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities
