Directorate of Rural Sanitation, Department of Rural Development, Jammu & Kashmir Government, has been given the responsibility of implementation of Sustainable and Zero Landfill Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2025.
For effective solid waste management, multiple camp locations have been identified on the entire Yatra route on the Pahalgam Axis and Baltal Axis. These camp locations are located near the waste generating areas such as base camp, langars and overnight transit camps and a Solid Waste Mangement Facility is established at each such camp location. Volunteers are deployed to personally interact with the yatris to make them aware about source segregation of waste and use of dustbins as per segregation guidelines for disposal of their waste. Various jingles, anthems are aired on the public announcement system to constantly spread awareness about sustainability activities.
Only segregated waste is collected from the waste generating points. This segregated waste is then brought to the Solid Waste Management Facility where the wet/organic/biodegradable waste is converted into organic compost through aerobic composting. The dry/inorganic/non-biodegradable waste is further sorted in to various categories for recycling.
The overall process flow is as follows:
